Last week, we encountered a unique request from a client who wanted to connect a microphone to their Sonos home entertainment system. This client frequently hosts large gatherings and wanted to be able to address guests using the Sonos speakers. The answer? It’s possible—with the right setup.
To connect a microphone, you’ll need a Sonos device with a line input, such as a Sonos Amp, Sonos Five, ERA 100, or ERA 300. Since microphones have a different impedance (mic level) than what Sonos devices support (line level), you’ll need a wireless microphone system that provides a line-level output.
Once the wireless microphone receiver is connected to your Sonos device, use the Sonos app to select the auxiliary input of that device. This source can then be shared with other speakers in your Sonos system. If you experience any delay, you can adjust the delay settings in the app, typically setting it to 0 for real-time sound.
