Can and When Should I Combine Different Rooms into a Music Zone with a Sonos Amp?

As we continue upgrading clients from older Bose systems to new Sonos systems, a common question arises about combining multiple rooms into a single music zone. This is usually to save on the cost of new Sonos amplifiers. While Sonos amplifiers can support 4 speakers and, in some cases, 6 speakers, there are other considerations to keep in mind.

First and foremost, consider whether you need separate volume control in each room. In some cases, such as adjoining dining and living rooms, independent volume control may not be necessary. However, combining a kitchen with an outdoor patio or deck is generally not advisable, as the outdoor speakers will always play when the kitchen speakers do.

Another factor is your music source. Do you ever need to play different music in different rooms? For instance, it's unlikely you would want different music playing in the dining room and living room simultaneously. However, you might want different music in the kitchen than in a home office, or different music indoors versus outdoors.

When deciding whether to combine multiple rooms into a single zone, ask yourself if independent volume control is needed. If the answer is yes, it's always best to invest in a second amplifier.
