Can I use my own AV contractor when building a new home?

Many times when we meet with clients that are building a new home, we often hear “Our builder says we must use their contractor or install the AV system after you move in but we don’t want their equipment brand”. This surprises most clients but it is a common practice for a variety of reasons such as familiarity, scheduling, and insurance. However, there is a good workaround that allows you to select your own contractor and still avoid running wires after you move in. Once your AV contractor has designed a system that meets your needs, ask the builder to have his AV contractor prewire your new home based on your contractor’s specifications. Most builders will agree to this solution as it meets everyone’s needs; the builder gets to use his contractor during the building phase and you get to select the contractor and brand you want.
